Detained and Denied Care: A Libyan Man's Struggle with a Rare Skin Condition

Libyan man in Minnesota for medical treatment for rare skin condition is detained by ICE agentsIn a shocking case of bureaucratic red tape, a Libyan man with a rare skin condition was detained by ICE agents in Minnesota, leaving him without access to the medical care he desperately needs. Hani Duglof, who has been living in the United States for over a decade, was pulled over by ICE vehicles while driving in Wisconsin and taken to a federal building, where he was held for 13 hours before being released.

A Rare Condition with Devastating Consequences
Duglof suffers from Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare genetic disorder that causes his skin to tear and blister easily. The condition also affects his esophagus, making it difficult for him to eat solid foods. Despite his best efforts to manage the condition, Duglof's skin is extremely fragile, leaving him vulnerable to even minor injuries.

A Decade of Struggle and Hope
Duglof first entered the United States on a visitor visa in 2014, seeking medical treatment for his condition. He has since been in the asylum process for over a decade, but his application remains pending. Despite this, Duglof's brother, Mohamad Duklef, says that ICE agents told him that Hani no longer had legal status, leaving him without access to the care he needs.

Detention and Denial of Care
Duglof was detained by ICE agents on January 10th of this year while driving in Wisconsin. He was taken to the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building in Fort Snelling, where he was held for 13 hours before being released. During his detention, Duglof's pleas for soft food were ignored, and he was placed in a room with standing water in the corner, exacerbating his condition.

A Systemic Failure
The case of Hani Duglof highlights the systemic failures of the US immigration system. Despite his decade-long struggle to obtain asylum, Duglof was denied access to medical care when he needed it most. The incident raises questions about the treatment of immigrants with rare conditions and the need for more comprehensive support systems.

The case of Hani Duglof is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by immigrants with rare conditions in the United States. As we continue to grapple with the complexities of immigration policy, it is essential that we prioritize the needs of those who are most vulnerable. By doing so, we can create a more compassionate and inclusive society for all.
