Inspiring Young Minds: Houston's 30th Annual Foley MLK Jr. Oratory Competition

Houston’s 30th annual Foley MLK Jr. Oratory CompetitionIn a heartwarming display of youthful passion and dedication to social justice, nine talented fourth- and fifth-grade students from the Houston Independent School District (HISD) gathered at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church for the 30th annual Foley MLK Jr. Oratory Competition. The event, held on January 21, 2026, was a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy and a testament to the power of education in shaping the next generation of leaders.

Competition Highlights
The competition, presented by Foley & Lardner LLP, challenged students to craft original three-to-five-minute speeches addressing the topic 'As a student of Dr. King's life, what message of hope do you think he would have for the world today?' The students' thought-provoking presentations were met with applause and admiration from the audience, who were inspired by their creativity, confidence, and commitment to social justice.

Otis Marks III: A Shining Star
Among the talented participants was Otis Marks III, a fifth-grade student from Blackshear Elementary. His heartfelt speech, which honored his late grandmother Marie Marks' courage during the civil rights movement, earned him first place in the competition. With his words, Otis reminded the audience that Dr. King's message of hope and equality is still relevant today, and that it is up to the next generation to carry on his legacy.

A Celebration of Community
The event was not only a celebration of the students' achievements but also a testament to the community's commitment to education and social justice. The historic Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, which hosted the competition for three decades, has been a beacon of hope and service in the Houston community for 160 years. The church's dedication to empowering young minds was evident in its support of the oratory competition.

A Call to Action
As the students took the stage, they reminded their peers and community that Dr. King's message is not just a relic of the past but a call to action for the present. They encouraged everyone to work towards creating a world where equality is not just spoken but lived every day, where there are no labels that divide us, and where people come together at the table of brotherhood. Their words were a powerful reminder that even the smallest actions can make a significant impact when combined with determination and passion.

The 30th annual Foley MLK Jr. Oratory Competition was a resounding success, showcasing the talents and dedication of young students from the Houston Independent School District. As we reflect on this inspiring event, let us remember that Dr. King's message of hope and equality is still relevant today. Let us continue to empower our youth with education, passion, and determination, and together, create a brighter future for all.
